Father Funes, director of the Vatican Observatory, recently wrote in the official Vatican newspaper that aliens may indeed exist. Just as I was trying to wrap my head around how these two world views could be integrated, Funes went on to suggest that aliens may even be free from original sin.
At that point I think my mind imploded.
It has a kind of Zen kōan quality about it. If the sound of one hand clapping isn’t doing it for you, just try contemplating how the doctrine of original sin applies to aliens.

Imagine the implications:
- heaven and hell paintings need to be reworked to add aliens
- Jesus to busy for second coming because he is visiting all these other worlds and maybe he doesn’t have to pay for their sins
- If aliens are technologically more advanced than we are, were they created before or after us? Or maybe we are all at the same level because, after all, the whole universe is not older more than a few thousands of years, and aliens are just all created in parallel.
And the list goes on …

I’m sure Raphael wouldn’t mind me adding a few flying saucers to some of his paintings… all in a very Renaissance style of course.

Only makes sense - the pope is a alien. Next they’ll be hailing starships and organizing mass repentance probing. I seen the documents.
